A psyop, technically speaking, is an attempt to influence people's beliefs, emotions or behaviour through carefully constructed information and messaging. Spies. Propaganda. Grainy footage. That sort of thing.

Is everything a psyop, though?

Look around and maybe it's not the maddest theory - everyone's selling something. But "everything" is a big word. Is a nice walk in the country a psyop? Young Knives reckon - maybe, yeah, kind of.

The song came from an article about the band Geese, who'd apparently juiced their rise to fame with a small army of fake YouTube and TikTok accounts — all posting about their songs, all showing up in the comments at once, all quietly convincing you they were the coolest new band on earth. Which is either genius or deeply unsettling, depending on your mood.

That got the song writing gears turning. Because it's not just bands and brands, is it? It's all of us. The stuff we love, the places we're loyal to, the beliefs we'll defend at a party - how much of that did we actually choose, and how much got planted there by our conditioning? I recently bought a camper van and I'm already grieving the day it inevitably breaks down or someone drives into it. It’s my baby - It completes me.

So this isn't a big statement or a call to arms, it’s a question that I thought was important: "hang on, is it though?" We're not here to tell anyone off, or claim we know better but was the walk in the country your idea, independent of influence?
